Here at the clinic we work with what I call “systemic manual therapy”. This means that you will never be told that today I have treated you with craniosacral therapy or today you have received a structural treatment. We use all the knowledge we have and integrate the techniques we have with us to give you the best treatment for the problem you have.
Your treatment will be based on your history and what we find during our examination.
A treatment with us is a manual therapeutic treatment with elements from osteopathy, physiotherapy, IMT, kinesiology and stress reduction techniques, general advice on diet or supplements. Techniques from kinesiology around brain function, hemispheric coordination, will often also be included so that a treatment is as specific as possible.
We have a culture here where we always ask each other if we are in doubt about something, if a technique doesn’t work, or if we are in doubt about a diagnosis/examination.
Osteopathy is basically just anatomy, biomechanics and physiology applied consistently. An osteopath treats connective tissue. Connective tissue is our largest organ, making up about 1/3 of our body weight. Connective tissue is a bit of a silly word as it sounds like it’s the “glue” that binds the body together.
The English “connective tissue” is more descriptive, as connective tissue not only holds our body together, skin, muscle membranes etc. But also connects the individual parts of the body to each other. It is our communication tissue.
Connective tissue also separates the individual parts of the body; muscles from each other, blood vessels and nerve tissue from the surrounding tissue etc. Finally, it is in the soft connective tissue, the connective tissue that is not fibrous, that all immune reactions and healing processes in the body take place. When we can treat all parts of the connective tissue, we can in principle treat all parts of the body.
IMT, integrative manual therapy, is a treatment method developed in the United States by Dr. Sharon Weiselfish Giammatteo. She developed IMT as a form of treatment that works with manual techniques on a deeper level. With IMT you can work with the connective tissue in the vascular, neurological, biomechanical and metabolic systems with great precision in the affected areas. This means that with IMT we have a unique approach to working with the whole body and can target treatment to hit specific points in the body, such as nerves, vessels and organs.
With IMT, we work with tissue motility and help the body heal and regulate itself to restore more normal function. We treat many types of problems with IMT, from the more “normal” pain/injuries, such as back and neck pain, to trauma treatment after accidents, difficult births and other traumatic events. IMT is also great for treating children and babies.
IMT is a very gentle form of treatment and can therefore be used for most people. It can also be used in more acute situations, as with this treatment we do not make a hard physical impact on the body.
Here at the clinic, IMT has given us a completely new way of working with trauma in the body. We have experienced success in treating many different types of trauma and have found that our patients achieve greater peace of mind and a better foundation for further treatment to have a longer-lasting effect.
We use techniques developed over the last 40 years by Dr. Sharon Giammatteo. Techniques that we have been taught by Jonathan Ahladas. Jonathan is an American physical therapist and IMT practitioner who trained at the Center IMT in Connecticut under Dr. Sharon Weiselfish Giammatteo. Jonathan has worked with IMT in both treatment and education for the past 25 years.
All 3 deep parts of the connective tissue are connected to each other. A tension in one part of the connective tissue will therefore cause tension elsewhere. We examine the whole body to find the tension and the problem that is central.
In other words, we try to find the primary lesion in relation to the pain or problem a given patient has. We then choose a treatment that fits the connective tissue structure we want to treat. This could be manipulative techniques, functional (relaxation) techniques, osteopathic craniosacral treatment, craniosacral therapy, dietary advice or supplements.
In short, we try to find and treat the root problem and not just the symptom. We do this using a wide range of examination and treatment techniques, all of which are clinically medically based.
